About The Company

Heritage in Every Bowl

Soup Restaurant Singapore Pte Ltd was born out of a desire to preserve the traditional recipes of Chinatown’s past. Founded in 1991 by a group of engineers, the first outlet opened at 25 Smith Street with a simple focus: serving herbal soups and authentic home-cooked dishes at affordable prices for young professionals who missed the taste of home.

The Legacy of the Samsui Women

The brand is synonymous with its signature Samsui Ginger Chicken. This dish is more than a culinary staple; it is a tribute to the Samsui women—laborers from the Sanshui district of China who arrived in Singapore in the mid-1930s. Traditionally consumed only once a year during the Lunar New Year due to their subsistence-level income, the dish is prepared by Soup Restaurant in the same traditional way—steamed to perfection and served with a fragrant ginger and sesame oil dip.

"We didn't start this for the money. We wanted to serve healthy, home-cooked food and doing it in Chinatown felt natural. For many people, Chinatown is a place associated with a mother's cooking and comfort food." — Wong Wei Teck, Director

Mission and Values

The company's mission is to achieve the status of a Singapore iconic brand while preserving the rich heritage of Singapore’s history. This is upheld through four core values: Integrity, Diligence, Learning, and Creativity. These values drive the company to not only maintain high standards of food safety and hygiene but also to ensure that every dish served provides a sense of respite and bonding for families.

Culture for Good and Key Achievements

As a recipient of the Culture for Good award, Soup Restaurant is recognized for its extensive community initiatives. The Group works closely with various charity organizations and voluntary welfare homes to provide nutritious meals to beneficiaries. Furthermore, it actively facilitates employment for under-served segments, including ex-offenders and persons with disabilities. Key achievements include being the first Chinese restaurant chain in Singapore awarded the Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) Training Excellence Award in 2007 and its successful listing on the Singapore Exchange in 2009.

Vision for the Future

With a vision to thrive for "100 years and beyond," Soup Restaurant remains committed to its heirloom culinary traditions. The company continues to expand its footprint across Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, striving to be a global ambassador for Nanyang flavor and Chinatown's unique heritage.
