About The Company

Matetopia A.C. began with a simple, stubborn belief: that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. We set out to change that. What started as a small summer program in Jalisco, Mexico, has grown into an independent civil association that now spans eight countries across Latin America. Our mission is to prove that social origin does not have to determine a young person’s destiny. If we provide an integral, continuous ecosystem to talented students, they will become a generation of change makers who transform the region beyond its current limits.

From the beginning, we built a model that wraps around a student for up to 16 years. We identify talent through competitions, teacher referrals, and open calls that reach rural and urban communities alike. We empower students with advanced workshops in mathematics, science, technology, and creativity, all while grounding them in character and leadership. We accompany them with mentors, scholarships, psychological support, and a personal portfolio. We recognise their achievements publicly, through badges, awards, and media. And we connect them to a lifelong community of peers, alumni, and partners. We call this the Matetopia model: identify, empower, accompany, recognise, connect.

International exposure came through a partnership with SIMCC, which brings competitions like SASMO, SIMOC, and STEAM Ahead to Latin American students, placing them beside the brightest minds from Asia and beyond. Our students have won nearly 1500 medals. But they do much more than compete. They design and implement social impact projects in their own neighbourhoods. To date, over 1,000 such projects have been completed by students still in primary and secondary school, tackling environmental crises, improving public spaces, promoting health, and supporting vulnerable people.

Our growth has been organic and mission driven. We now reach over 250,000 students annually across more than 5,000 schools. Governments in our region, seeing the evidence, invested over 4 million USD in 2025 alone to expand this work. Most of our team are alumni who once walked through the very programmes they now lead. That virtuous circle is our greatest proof of concept: a child enters, grows, serves, and returns to lift others.

Matetopia A.C. is not a project with an end date. It is a permanent infrastructure for talent. Our story is still being written by the thousands of young change makers who are, right now, proving that the next transformative idea can come from anywhere, as long as someone opens the door.

About The Leadership

Cuauhtémoc Cruz Herrera’s path to founding Matetopia began in a 7th grade public school classroom in Jalisco, Mexico. An external teacher invited him to free math problem solving workshops for the Math Olympiads. He fell in love immediately. A few weeks later, against expectations, he won one of only eight gold medals in the entire state. The victory should have been pure joy, but it surfaced a painful reality: he was the only public school student in the group, the only one without a math club, a private tutor, or any institutional support. His parents took out a loan to pay for test prep, the only option they could find, and through relentless effort he earned his spot at nationals.

When he approached his school for the equivalent of 50 US dollars to cover a bus ride, the vice principal responded, “Cuauhtemoc, you got into that problem [going to nationals], now you solve it yourself.” Those words broke him at first, but then they lit a fire. In that moment he set a life goal: to change the quantity and quality of educational opportunities for every student, especially those in public schools, so that no child would ever feel alone or undeserving of their own talent. He was 13 years old.

He started immediately, running free math workshops for younger children. That small act grew into a pattern. He built a peer tutoring model, founded the NGO Matetopia A.C. in 2017 (Previously Integración Lógica Matemática), and with a 8,000 US dollar grant, launched free summer programmes for public school students. When funding ran out, a child asked, “What’s next?” and the question never left him. It pulled him toward systemic change.

By his early twenties he had been recognized as one of the 25 top emerging entrepreneurs in Minnesota under age 25, earned the Global Citizen of the Year award, and completed a master’s in Education Policy and Analysis at Harvard with a special education scholarship from Harvard Foundation in Mexico. He returned to Mexico to accept an offer: the State’s Minister of Education created a new department for him to scale his programmes across the public system. In two years, his work reached 24,000 students and 270 teachers. Immersed in bureaucracy, he learned how to navigate red tape, inspire weary educators, and build bridges where communication had broken down. Cuauhtémoc later served as the General Director of Extracurricular Education at the Department of Education.

Matetopia A.C. then grew as an independent civil association, taking the model that had transformed lives in Jalisco, Mexico and opening it to all of Latin America. Today Matetopia identifies, empowers, accompanies, recognizes, and connects talented students over a 16 year continuum, bringing world class STEAM competitions and social impact projects to over 250,000 young people across eight countries. The organisation is led largely by alumni who once walked the same path as the students they now serve, a deliberate design that keeps the mission alive across generations.

Cuauhtémoc’s story is the DNA of Matetopia. It is a story of a public school kid who scraped together bus fare and became a global education leader. It is the proof that talent is equally distributed, but opportunity is not, and that fixing that gap is not an act of charity but of justice. Every programme, partnership, and decision inside Matetopia is anchored in that singular, lived truth: when a child’s potential is met with support, the world changes, one change maker at a time.
